World’s Wroclaw

World’s Wrocław is a pilot urban educational project that was created in response to challenges related to the growing number of foreigners in our city. Currently, citizens from around 120 countries live in Wrocław. In Wrocław schools and kindergartens, over 2,000 children and youth from 41 countries are taught in 18 languages.

“World’s Wrocław” is a series of lessons for children and school youth on the subject of multiculturalism with the participation of foreigners. The aim of the project is to raise the intercultural competence of children and young people and their teachers, building attitudes of openness and respect for other people regardless of their country of origin and culture.

General activities

The school through the Wroclaw Center for Social Development has the opportunity to invite foreigners to participate in geography, foreign languages, educational classes, artistic classes, activities in the community center and others. During the classes, the teacher presents the place of his origin, city and country in an interactive way and he introduces his own culture: customs, language, art, cuisine, etc. During the classes, students with the support of a teacher or parents present knowledge about their own culture.

Method

Classes consist of two parts. In the first part, a foreigner in the presence of a teacher presents knowledge appropriate to the age of the recipients and the chosen lesson (geography, foreign languages, etc.). In the second part, pupils will learn about their own culture. The presentation may take the form of a multimedia show, a mini-lecture, a theatrical performance, a photography exhibition, etc. During the classes the participants, with the help of an interpreter (optional), establish a dialogue and exchange their personal reflections and experiences. The proposed time of classes is 90 minutes.

For whom?

The classes are addressed to children and youth from 7 to 15 years of age and to all adults interested in social integration and raising intercultural competences, in particular to teachers, pedagogues and other people working in Wroclaw educational institutions.

Benefits of participation

During the classes, young people and children broaden their knowledge about other countries and personally meet representatives of other cultures living in Wrocław, learn cultural sensitivity and show kindness and hospitality. Teachers have the opportunity to develop their own work skills and to raise intercultural competence. Parents have the opportunity to actively support the processes of integration of their children in schools. Foreigners, on the other hand, get a chance to get to know the people of Wrocław better and have an additional opportunity to integrate. Classes give all participants the opportunity to change perspective and look at Wrocław through the eyes of other residents of our city.
